Osteoporosis

Recently, I have received a lot of questions and requests for consultation pertaining to Osteoporosis. It seems that plenty of women are being told that they have osteopenia or osteoporosis based on a recent scan, but the flow of information from doctors seems to stop there. Most women I talk to are very averse to taking the medications that are currently available for treatment, and rightfully so as they carry significant risks. I have found myself really enjoying these consultations with clients about safe, effective, and appropriate exercises in the setting of decreased bone density. Bone mass DOES INDEED CHANGE if we do the right things to stimulate bone growth. Combining dietary changes, exercise programs, and education on the disease and its management can alter the trajectory of bone aging. You can improve your scores, and you can and should exercise in the appropriate ways. If unsure of the do's and dont's for exercise in regards to Osteoporosis, consider a session with a PT for expert guidance.
